Understanding Women’s Cancers

What are gynecological cancers?

Gynecological cancers develop in a woman’s reproductive organs. They include cancers of the ovaries, uterus or endometrium, cervix, vulva and vagina. Each type behaves differently and may require a different combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other treatment.

A surgical oncologist evaluates whether surgery is appropriate, what procedure may be required, and how it should fit into the complete cancer-treatment sequence. This decision is based on the cancer type, stage, imaging, biopsy findings, previous treatment and the patient’s overall health.

!
Important: Not every patient needs surgery first. A multidisciplinary review can help determine the safest and most appropriate sequence of care.

When should you seek a surgical oncology opinion?

  • After a confirmed or suspected gynecological cancer diagnosis
  • When imaging shows an ovarian, uterine or pelvic mass
  • When cancer surgery has been advised
  • For a second opinion on operability or treatment sequence
  • When exploring minimally invasive or robotic surgery
  • When ovarian cancer may have spread within the abdomen
Conditions Evaluated

Gynecological cancers treated

Treatment is individualised after reviewing pathology, imaging, stage and overall clinical condition.

01

Ovarian Cancer

Surgical evaluation for ovarian tumours, staging, cytoreductive surgery and selected advanced treatment approaches.

02

Uterine Cancer

Evaluation and surgery for endometrial and other uterine cancers, based on stage and risk factors.

03

Cervical Cancer

Surgical opinion for suitable early-stage cases and multidisciplinary planning when other treatment is required.

04

Other Pelvic Cancers

Assessment of selected vulvar, vaginal, pelvic and complex recurrent gynecological tumours.

Symptoms Need Evaluation

Possible warning signs

Persistent abdominal bloating or swelling
Unexplained pelvic or abdominal pain
Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Bleeding after menopause
Feeling full quickly or reduced appetite
Changes in bowel or bladder habits
Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
A pelvic or ovarian mass on imaging
Do Not Self-Diagnose

These symptoms do not always mean cancer

Many of these symptoms can occur due to non-cancerous conditions. However, symptoms that are new, persistent, worsening or unusual for you should not be ignored—especially postmenopausal bleeding or a suspicious pelvic mass.

Early evaluation can help identify the cause and, where cancer is present, support timely staging and treatment planning.

Advanced Surgical Options

Robotic and minimally invasive gynecological cancer surgery

In selected patients, robotic or laparoscopic techniques may allow the surgeon to operate through smaller incisions using magnified visualisation and specialised instruments.

Potential benefits may include less postoperative discomfort, smaller scars and earlier recovery. These benefits are not guaranteed, and minimally invasive surgery is not suitable for every cancer or every patient.

Suitability depends on:

  • Type and stage of cancer
  • Tumour size and location
  • Possible spread to nearby organs
  • Previous abdominal or pelvic surgery
  • Overall health and anaesthetic fitness
  • Oncological safety of the proposed approach

Patient Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does a gynecological cancer surgeon treat?
A gynecological cancer surgeon evaluates and performs surgery for cancers involving the ovaries, uterus, cervix and other female reproductive organs. Treatment may also involve medical and radiation oncologists.
When should I consult a surgical oncologist?
You may seek a consultation after a confirmed diagnosis, a suspicious pelvic or ovarian mass, advice for cancer surgery, or when you need a second opinion regarding operability and treatment sequence.
Is surgery always the first treatment?
No. The sequence depends on the cancer type, stage and overall condition. Some patients may need surgery first, while others may require chemotherapy or radiation before surgery.
Can ovarian cancer be treated with surgery?
Surgery is an important part of treatment for many ovarian cancers. The type and timing of surgery depend on disease extent, imaging, fitness and multidisciplinary planning.
Is robotic surgery suitable for uterine cancer?
Robotic or laparoscopic surgery may be considered for selected uterine cancer patients. Suitability must be assessed individually, with oncological safety as the priority.
What reports should I bring to the consultation?
Carry available biopsy or pathology reports, CT/MRI/PET scans and films, blood-test reports, prior treatment records, discharge summaries and a list of current medicines.
Can I consult Dr. Krunal for a second opinion?
Yes. Patients may consult for review of diagnosis, stage, proposed surgery, treatment sequence or possible robotic and advanced surgical options.

The clinic is at Cancer Care, Aditya Enclave, Central Bazar Road, opposite Somalwar High School, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur 440010.
