Follow-Up After Cancer Surgery: What a Personal Care Plan Should Include

Finishing an operation does not automatically finish the cancer-care pathway. Follow-up should cover recovery, any further treatment and a plan for ongoing review. Ask for a written plan that is specific enough for you and your family to use between appointments.

01 / Patient Resources

Separate recovery review from longer-term surveillance

An early postoperative visit may focus on healing and the final pathology. Longer-term follow-up has additional purposes, including monitoring for recurrence and treatment effects. Ask what the next appointment is intended to address so important questions are not left for a later visit by accident.

02 / Patient Resources

Agree on tests rather than requesting everything

The schedule and choice of investigations depend on the cancer and treatment. Ask which tests are recommended, what each is intended to detect and who will review the result. More frequent scans are not automatically the right answer for every patient.

03 / Patient Resources

Include daily function and wellbeing

Mention eating difficulties, pain, bowel changes, fatigue, mobility and emotional concerns. Follow-up is also an opportunity to discuss practical problems affecting work and family life. Bring a short list of the issues that matter most so they can be addressed rather than lost in a conversation only about scans.

04 / Patient Resources

Keep one accessible record

Save your operation note, final pathology, treatment summary and current medicines. Record which team coordinates care and which clinician should receive new results. Ask what symptoms should prompt contact before the next visit. Do not wait for a routine surveillance date if a serious new problem develops.

Patient FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does a normal scan end the need for follow-up?

Not necessarily. Follow the plan agreed for your diagnosis and treatment rather than changing it after one result.

Should every cancer survivor follow the same schedule?

No. Follow-up is tailored to the cancer type, previous treatment and individual circumstances.
